4 Essential Responsibilities of a Coach: What You Need to Know

As a coach, your primary responsibility is to motivate and enhance the performance and abilities of athletes. This involves conducting training sessions, organizing practice drills, and providing counseling. You must also plan, teach, assess and adjust to guarantee quality sports practices and prepare for competition. Moreover, you must demonstrate due respect for the human rights, integrity and value of all people.

It is essential to recognize individual rights to privacy, confidentiality, self-determination and autonomy. However, you must be aware that legal and other responsibilities may create inconsistencies and conflicts with the exercise of these rights. To be an effective coach, you should strive to learn more about cultural, personal and positional disparities such as those stemming from age, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language and socioeconomic status. At the core of ethical competence is the search for information and action that distinguishes between acceptable and unacceptable actions.

As a coach, you must adhere to a high ethical competence in your practice. If you discover that one person is out of sync with the team's ability to work together, it is your responsibility to train them without disrupting the team's performance.

Integrity

is another ethical responsibility of a coach. Representing yourself in an honest and equitable way helps you recognize your own competencies and weaknesses.

You also have a special responsibility to obey and promote the interests of disadvantaged or dependent people unable to defend their own rights. Within each of the core responsibilities, there is a set of standards that identify the knowledge and skills (or competencies) that would help coaches fulfill the core responsibilities.
