With the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, the ensuing economic crisis and, now, the global protests sparked by the assassination of George Floyd, “getting discouraged” may be underestimating the reality of what many of us are feeling. If you've been feeling discouraged, I want to share 13 strategies I've been using to help me overcome them.
Without a strategy, discouragement can quickly lead to hopelessness. It also helps you reconnect with your body so you can feel firm and stop being carried away by your thoughts and feelings. An additional tip is to smile while you breathe. I know, you don't feel like smiling.
Do them together and you'll start to feel better almost immediately. When I feel discouraged, I go out for long walks. It's amazing how effective it can be in lifting my spirits. Walking helps me process my feelings and find a healthy outlet for my accumulated energy.
That's why you must commit to the practice of forgiveness. Remember that you've been through some things. Your strength comes from your ability to connect to the deepest part of your being. So tap into your inner resources and remember that you are a survivor.
Find creative ways to connect with your friends. Meet in a park with masks on and practice social distancing. Call a friend, use Skype, or zoom in. Write an email or letter to someone you haven't heard from in a long time.
At first it may seem forced. You will transform your discouragement into hope and activate your creativity. If you think laughing is too much, start with a smile. Don't worry about how silly it looks.
Simply turn the corner of your mouth upward. Prayer is the simple act of opening your heart to realities that go beyond what you can see, hear, smell, or touch. When we feel discouraged, scared, or overwhelmed, it's easy to think that we need to put our lives on hold. But even when external circumstances restrict what you can do, you can choose to live your life.
